Midway had entered the San Francisco Naval Shipyard on 11 February 1966 for a massive modernization (SCB-101.66), which proved expensive and controversial. The flight deck was enlarged from 11,300 to 16,200 m², and the angle of the flight deck landing area was increased to 13.5 degrees. The elevators were enlarged, moved, and given almost double the weight capacity. Midway also received new catapults, arresting gear, and a centralized air conditioning plant. Cost overruns raised the price of this program from $88 million to $202 million, and precluded a similar modernization planned for USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA 42). After Midway was finally recommissioned on 31 January 1970, it was found that the modifications had hurt the ship's seakeeping capabilities and ability to conduct air operations in rough seas, which required further modifications to correct the problem. leaving dry dock at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco after conversion - December 1968 in dry dock at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco - 1968 recommissioned on January 31, 1970 SCB-101 modification at San Francisco Naval Shipyard, California: February 1966 - January 1970 decommissioned on February 15, 1966 with CVW-2 embarked - 1965 with CVW-2 embarked - October 1965 with CVW-2 embarked - 1965 October 1965 with CVW-2 embarked - May 1965 with CVW-2 embarked - March 1964 with CVW-2 embarked - Hong Kong - December 1963 with CVG-2 embarked - November 1963 with CVG-2 embarked - June 1963 with CVG-2 embarked - June 1963 with CVG-2 embarked - early 1960's with CVG-2 embarked - 1962 with CVG-2 embarked - 1962 with CVG-2 embarked - 1961 with CVG-2 embarked - entering Pearl Harbor, Hawaii - August 1959 USS Midway launching Douglas A-3 Skywarriors - late 1950's with CVG-2 embarked - 1958 USS Hancock (CVA 19), USS Midway (CVA 41), and USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31) berthed at Naval Air Station Alameda, California - 1958 off Coronado, California (USA), following her SCB-110 modernization - January 1958 with CVG-1 embarked - 1955 with CVG-1 embarked - 1955 USS Midway (CVA 41) leaving Norfolk, Virginia - December 27, 1954.
