Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron ONE THREE TWO was originally
designated Patrol Squadron TWENTY NINE (VP-29) flying the P-2V
"Neptune" at Naval Air Station North Island, California. In April
1957, the squadron was redesignated Heavy Attack Squadron TWO
(VAH-2) and transitioned to the A-3D "Skywarrior." The squadron's
homeport was changed in April 1958 to Naval Air Station Whidbey
Island, Washington. In November 1968, VAH-2 was redesignated
Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron ONE THREE TWO (VAQ-132),
transitioning to the EKA-3B at NAS Whidbey Island. Electronic Attack Squadron ONE THREE TWO was originally designated Patrol Squadron TWENTY NINE (VP-29) flying the P-2V "Neptune" at Naval Air Station North Island, California. In April 1957, the squadron was re-designated Heavy Attack Squadron TWO (VAH-2) and transitioned to the A-3D "Skywarrior." The squadron's homeport was changed in April 1958 to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. In November 1968, VAH-2 was redesignated Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron ONE THREE TWO (VAQ-132), transitioning to the EKA-3B. In January 1971 VAQ-132 became the first operational squadron to transition to the new EA-6B "Prowler." As the first Prowler squadron in Vietnam, VAQ-132 flew combat support flights from six different carriers on YANKEE STATION in the Gulf of Tonkin. On January 17, 1991, after Iraq invaded Kuwait, VAQ-132 was once again the first Prowler squadron to fight, this time in Operation DESERT STORM. In February 1994, the Scorpions were once more first on the scene when shots were fired in support of NATO's Operation DENY FLIGHT over Bosnia-Herzegovina. From 1996 to 2002, VAQ-132 participated in the following operations: Operations JOINT ENDEAVOR, DELIBERATE FORGE and JOINT GUARDIAN over Bosnia/Herzegovina and Operation SOUTHERN WATCH over Iraq. In 2002, the squadron conducted extended duration missions over Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM onboard the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73), and in 2004 and 2007, VAQ-132 deployed in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. In April 2008, the squadron deployed onboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) for Partnership of the Americas and upon return, turned in its EA-6B aircraft and again became the first operational squadron to transition the Electronic Attack community, this time into the new EA-18G "Growler." VAQ-132 completed the EA-18G transition in September 2009 and along with changeover became an expeditionary squadron. In 2010, VAQ-132 became the first squadron to deploy with the Growler, providing support to Operation NEW DAWN in Iraq, and became the first to employ the AGM-88 HARM in combat from the Growler while supporting Operations ODYSSEY DAWN and UNIFIED PROTECTOR over Libya. In 2012, VAQ-132 flew the first Growlers across the International Date Line enroute to Exercise FOAL EAGLE in the Republic of Korea; and the first Growlers in the Southern Hemisphere enroute to Exercise Growler '12 at Royal Australian Air Force Base Amberley. The Scorps also conducted the first expeditionary Growler deployment to the Pacific, conducting exercises in six countries. In 2014 the Scorps conducted their second Pacific deployment to Misawa, Japan. The Scorps Deployed again to Misawa Japan in 2015 and 2017. In late2017 the Squadron answered the call to deploy to Incirlik AB flying combat missions in Syria and Iraq in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. The Squadron successfully conducted operations against ISIS over Syria and Iraq. In 2018 the squadron completed EWARP, and participated in two Red Flags. The Scorpions started their latest deployment in March 2019, shortly after becoming the first operational Growler squadron to transition to the new H14 software build, moving 200 personnel and 5 combat-ready jets from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island to Naval Air Facility Misawa, Japan. Once on station in Misawa, the Scorpions conducted training operations with F-16 Vipers from the 14th Fighter Squadron. They also sent two jets to an airshow in Langkawi Malaysia, a first for the Scorps. In April, the squadron moved to Osan Air Base, Korea and participated in Combined Training Flying Event 2019 with the Republic of Korea Air Force and U.S. Air Force units stationed in the area. VAQ-132 returned to Misawa in May and was tasked by CTF-70 to provide alert air intercept support for the USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76) Strike Group, a first for a Growler expeditionary squadron in PACOM. The squadron also worked with the 13th Fighter Squadron in Exercise Pacific Weasel to integrate joint suppression of enemy air defense (SEAD) tactics. In late May, the Scorpions repositioned to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam to participate in Exercise Pacific Vanguard while working alongside numerous U.S. and partner nation surface vessels. While in Guam, VAQ-132 flew extensively with the Red Devils of VMFA-232, a Marine F/A-18C Hornet Squadron. The Scorpions and the 69th Expeditionary Bombing Squadron led an effort to conduct several long-range strike training operations with numerous other joint assets in the region. After moving back to Misawa in August, the Scorpions conducted simultaneous split-site operations out of Misawa and Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. In September, VAQ-132 participated in Exercise Iron Spear with air defense assets from the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force. Finally the Scorpions finished out the deployment in October, conducting unit level training, and officially turned over five combat ready aircraft to their sister squadron, the VAQ-138 Yellow Jackets. The Scorpions had a highly successful deployment flying over 1,800 flight hours with a 98% sortie completion rate while greatly contributing to power projection and regional security across the Western Pacific. source: VAQ-132 - - - - - another history: In November 1968, VAH-2 was redesignated as Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 132 (VAQ-132) and transitioned to the EKA-3B. In January 1971, they received the EA-6B Prowler and became the first operational squadron to transition to the new aircraft. On 7 November 2008, VAQ-132 held their ceremonial last flight in the Grumman EA-6B Prowler and began the transition to the brand-new, Boeing EA-18G Growler in February 2009 with flight certification in mid-2009. Initial operational capability (IOC) was achieved on 22 September 2009, making them the first operational EA-18G squadron. On 5 August 2009, EA-18Gs from VAQ-132 and Electronic Attack Squadron 129 (VAQ-129) completed their first at-sea carrier-arrested landing (trap) aboard USS Harry S. Truman. The United States Navy's new Boeing EA-18G Growler ( "Grizzly" ) was first used in combat during Operation Odyssey Dawn by supporting efforts to enforce a UN no-fly-zone over Libya. The five EA-18Gs of VAQ-132 "Scorpions" were redeployed from Al' Asad Air Base, Iraq to Aviano Air Base, Italy to support Libya operations. source: wikipedia NOTE: Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadrons (TACELRON) were redesignated to Electronic Attack Squadrons (VAQRON) on March 30, 1998 |
